Paint colour mixing is a fun way to supporting children’s development. This activity can support different areas of the EYFS…
- Physical
- Expressive Arts and Design
Materials Needed
- Coloured paint
- Sellotape
- Food bag
- Plain paper
- Scissors
Step 1 – Paint
First ask the children what colours they would like to use, I would stick with 2 or 3 colours.
For young children place small drops of paint on the paper and for older children allow them to put their own drops on the paper.
Some things to consider when preparing this with children
- Ask the child to name the colours or if they know the colours
- Ask the child to predict the colour when mixed
Step 2 – Seal
Carefully place the paper into the food bag and use the sellotape to seal the bag.
Step 3 – Play
Now you can allow the child to explore and mix the paints without the mess.
For young children I would suggest taping the bag to the table or wall as they like the sound the bag makes when scrunching it up. If you want to keep the outcome of the painting.
Or you can let them explore the noise and the paint. you maybe able to straighten out the picture if its not to bad before moving onto step 4.
Some things to consider during this activity
- Discuss any shapes they may have formed
- Discuss any colours the child may see as they mix them up
- Discuss how this feel.
step 4 – Removal
Carefully cut the food bag all around the picture and peel back the plastic, this will prevent the picture from being altered.
For the older children show them where to cut and support them through doing this themselves.
Be careful when removing the paper as it will be very wet from the pain and will rip.
Step 5 – Drying
Leave to dry, this could take some time depending on how much paint had been used.
Now you can display the child’s work or even place it in a frame.
Remember to involve the child through each step.
