Literacy

Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters
and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range
of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their
interest

These involve 2 different aspects
  • Reading
  • Writing

There are many different ways you can do to support these

Books

Here are some activities to do together when looking at stories.(give your child time to respond)

  • Read familiar stories, pause occasionally and encourage children to read the next word
  • Create an area children can quietly read/look at books
  • Discuss the characters from the stories
  • Play games such as letter or word bingo
  • Use different voices when reading stories

Mark Making

Here are some activities to support mark making

  • Listen to what children say about their pictures
  • Encourage children to form letters
  • Give children a variety of paper, note pads, pencils, pens
  • Support motor skills for younger children.

Everyday routines
